|Thank you <3|
Hello everyone! If you read Bodyguard (recently or way back), thank you so much! This is a journal mostly about that, and what the future holds for it.
If you were here the last time around, when I originally uploaded the comic, you might remember there was a sequel I began not long after the ending of the comic. Nothing ever came of it, because I got maybe 30 pages in before succumbing to the worst art block I've ever faced. It also didn't help that I hadn't planned the sequel well enough. It had no future.
That sequel is scrapped, but I do have other ideas now. There is a sequel I'd like to do, but there are a few questions that need to be answered before that.
I had a good time redrawing Bodyguard. I enjoyed updating the art and adding pages here and there, and I of course loved your feedback. However, the more I worked on it the more I realized I'm really not cut out to be a comic artist. It's just so much work, and it began feeling like a chore. I had planned to be more innovative with the redraw – break panel structure, do something interesting with it, pay attention to every panel and make sure everything looked great. In the beginning I tried, but after a while it just kind of fell apart.
Don't get me wrong. I love the comic format. I think it's a great way to tell a story. It's just that it demands so much, and I don't think I've got what it takes. I love drawing, and I love storytelling, but the two combined are a task that takes so much energy.
I might do a short comic or a few sometime in the future, of course, but full-length stories just seem like a task I'm not up for at the moment. Never say never and all that, but let's be real.
And here we get to the point. If there's going to be a sequel to Bodyguard, it's not going to be a comic. I just can't do it anymore. It takes more effort than I can spare right now, quite frankly. If there's a sequel, it will be in written format – you can see the style it would be if you look at the Bodyguard backstory I put up this week, Sins of the Father. So mostly text, but with a few illustrations here and there.
I'm not saying writing is easy. Drawing isn't, either. But when you can focus solely on one, it feels like such a relief.
So this brings us to you guys. I'm gonna need some opinions, and for that, I've put up a poll. Please leave an answer! There's no “maybe” option, because that’s honestly not a very useful one when thinking about how many are interested. If you're in the “maybe” camp, leave a comment and tell me what would affect your decision.
See my front page if it didn't show up in your messages!
Please note that the sequel won't be a comic no matter what the outcome of the poll. Your opinions only affect whether it makes sense for me to spend time making a sequel in the first place.
